A hotel key in your wallet. What has to happen first?
The guest sees a key on a phone or watch. Behind it sits a supported combination of credential provider, hotel systems, reader hardware and device.
A wallet pass is not necessarily a key
Digital wallets can hold many kinds of passes. An access credential needs a compatible reader and a service that can issue and manage it. Adding a reservation card or QR code to a wallet does not automatically give it NFC door access.
Apple and Google each document requirements for their hotel-key ecosystems. Eligibility and provisioning may change, so use the current platform and provider documentation when specifying a deployment.
Provisioning is part of the guest journey
The guest needs a valid reservation, supported device and a permitted way to add the credential. Depending on the hotel and provider, setup may involve an app or another supported flow. Avoid promising universal app-free enrollment without checking the actual implementation.
At the door, supported express access can reduce the steps required to present the key. Treat that as a specific feature to confirm, not an assumption about every phone, watch or wallet credential.
Ask about everyday exceptions
How does another guest in the room receive access? What happens during a room move? Can staff revoke a lost device’s credential? What fallback is offered to someone with an unsupported phone? These questions are as important as the first successful tap.
Low-battery and power-reserve behavior is device- and platform-specific. Keep a practical alternative rather than telling guests that every wallet key works after a phone battery is depleted.
Start with the installed readers
A hotel may be able to retain some existing access hardware, but compatibility is model-specific. Have the provider confirm the reader, firmware, credential service and integration needed for your property before making a rollout plan.
