No signal. Now what?
“Works offline” is the start of a conversation. Ask which part works, for whom, and for how long.
Four failures, four different questions
Guest connectivity: can a previously issued credential open the door without mobile data? Building connectivity: can the door validate that credential if the property’s internet or gateway is unavailable? These are separate tests.
Power: what happens when the lock battery or the guest’s phone is depleted? Integration: what happens if the reservation update never reaches the access platform? A local radio connection cannot fix a credential that was never issued.
Expiry is not the same as cancellation
A locally stored permission may contain an end time that the lock can enforce without checking the cloud. An early cancellation is new information. It needs a supported route to the system that makes the access decision.
Ask how revocation reaches an offline lock, what delay is possible and whether an on-site action is required. Document the result instead of assuming that an action shown in a dashboard is already enforced at the door.
Make backup access a managed process
Depending on the property, a fallback may involve a physical key or card, a controlled backup code or assistance from staff. A remote-unlock button is only useful when its own communication path is working.
Avoid turning one permanent code into a universal workaround. Set out who may release backup access, how the guest is checked and how the permission is retired afterward.
Run the unglamorous demo
Before rollout, disconnect the gateway, turn off the guest’s mobile data and simulate a missed booking update. Test these separately so you know which dependency failed. Follow the hardware vendor’s safe procedures for battery and power tests.
Record what the guest sees, what the operator sees and who gets called. A short, tested arrival instruction can be more valuable at midnight than another dashboard feature.
